About Rubus vestitus Weihe

Rubus vestitus Weihe is a European species of brambles in the rose family, known as European blackberry in the United States. It is native to Europe, and has become naturalized along the northern Pacific Coast of North America, including British Columbia in Canada, and Washington and Oregon in the United States. This is a spiny shrub that can grow up to 2 meters (80 inches) tall. Its leaves are palmately compound, bearing either 3 or 5 leaflets. Each leaflet is wide and nearly round, with a pointed tip and toothed edges. The flowers are pink or magenta, and the fruits are very dark, almost black. Rubus vestitus is one of the most common bramble species in the British Isles, found across most vice-counties except for the far northern region. Unlike most European Rubus species, it prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soils, placing it in a minority of European Rubus.
