About Rubus cuneifolius Pursh
Rubus cuneifolius Pursh, commonly known as the sand blackberry, is a North American flowering plant species belonging to the rose family. In its native range, it grows across eastern United States, found in every coastal state from Louisiana to New Hampshire, with the exception of Rhode Island. Inland populations have also been reported in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, and the species has become invasive in South Africa. Within its native range, R. cuneifolius has been observed growing in a variety of habitat types including hardwood forests, longleaf pinelands, and wooded floodplains. It has also been documented growing in disturbed environments such as roadsides and firebreaks. The genetics of the genus Rubus are extremely complex, making it difficult to determine which groups should be recognized as distinct species. Many rare Rubus species, including this one, have limited geographic ranges, and further study is recommended to clarify the taxonomy of this group.
