About Rubus crataegifolius Bunge
Rubus crataegifolius, commonly known as Korean raspberry, is a raspberry species native to East Asia. It is a shrub that typically grows 1 to 2 meters tall, and rarely reaches 3 meters in height. Its leaves are 5 to 12 centimeters long and 5 to 8 centimeters broad, with palmately arranged three or five lobes and a serrated margin. The flowers measure 1 to 1.5 centimeters in diameter, and have five white petals. Its fruit is an aggregate fruit 1 centimeter in diameter, composed of numerous small drupelets. This species grows on forest margins and mountain slopes, in areas with moist, well-drained soil. Its fruit is used as food, and the species is sometimes cultivated. The cultivar 'Jingu Jengal' has been selectively bred for its large fruit. Studies have found that root extracts of this species contain substances that produce anti-inflammatory effects in mice.
