It grows in Central America, northwestern South America, and central and southern Mexico, ranging from Michoacán and Veracruz south to Ecuador and Venezuela. This plant is a shrub that can reach up to 6 meters in height. It has abundant hairs and scattered curved prickles. Its leaves are compound, with either 3 or 5 leaflets per leaf. The flowers can be white or pink, and the fruits are red or black.
