About Rosa majalis Herrm.

Rosa majalis Herrm. is a deciduous shrub species in the genus Rosa, commonly called cinnamon rose or double cinnamon rose. Its scientific synonyms are Rosa cinnamomea sensu L. 1759 (non 1753), and Rosa cinnamomea auct. non L. It is native to forests of Europe and Siberia, specifically to northern Europe and Siberia. In Europe, its range covers most of European Russia, the Baltic countries, and Scandinavia (excluding Denmark), with more isolated populations found in Central Europe, primarily in wet habitats in Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, and the Alps. This shrub grows up to 2 meters tall, and produces edible rose hips that are rich in vitamin C. These hips are used in medicine and to make rose hip syrup. Rosa majalis has a history of garden cultivation, with cultivation in Britain dating back to the 16th century. Both the binomial name Rosa majalis and its synonym Rosa cinnamomea are ambiguous, and have been applied to multiple other Rosa species by different authors.
