About Rhyothemis variegata (Linnaeus, 1763)

Rhyothemis variegata is a medium-sized dragonfly with a dark body and pale yellow-tinted colorful wings. A few black spots are present on the apices and nodes of the fore-wings. The base of the hind-wings has a large patch marked with black and golden yellow. For females, the apical half of the fore-wings is transparent, while the basal half is tinted golden-yellow with black marks. The apical ends of the female's hind-wings are transparent, and the remaining area of the wings is marked with golden-yellow and black. This species breeds in marshes, ponds, and paddy fields. It has weak flight, and can easily be mistaken for a butterfly.
