About Rhyothemis resplendens Selys, 1878
Rhyothemis resplendens, commonly known as the Jewel flutterer, is a dragonfly species belonging to the family Libellulidae. Its genus, Rhyothemis, has a range that extends from Africa to the western Pacific, and five species from this genus are known to occur in Australia. Rhyothemis resplendens has blue metallic reflecting panels on both its forewings and hindwings. This species inhabits streams, rivers, and still waters in and adjacent to coastal Queensland, Australia, ranging from around Mackay to the northern part of Cape York Peninsula. To the north of Australia, it can also be found in the Moluccas, New Guinea, and the Bismarck Archipelago. It is a small dragonfly, with a wingspan of 40 to 60 millimeters and a body length of approximately 25 millimeters. On adult individuals, the markings on the hindwing are longer than the markings on the forewing. This taxon has been assessed by the IUCN Red List as a species of least concern.
