About Rhyothemis princeps Kirby, 1894
Rhyothemis princeps, commonly known as the sapphire flutterer, is a dragonfly species belonging to the family Libellulidae. Most species in the genus Rhyothemis have the common name suffix "flutterer" because flight of the genus is typically fluttering. Rhyothemis princeps is found only in Australia and New Guinea. It is a medium-sized dragonfly, with a length of 40mm and a wingspan of 70mm. It lives in a variety of freshwater habitats including lakes, ponds, and swamps. Its abdomen ranges from dark blue to black, and its wings are dark, with two or three pale patches on the outer section. Males have dark patches that extend to their wingtips, while females have clear wingtips. In sunlight, the dragonfly's dark colours can reflect a metallic purplish tinge. In Australia, its range is restricted to north-eastern Queensland, from the Cape York Peninsula to the area around Rockhampton.
