About Rhynchospora megaplumosa E.L.Bridges & Orzell
Rhynchospora megaplumosa, commonly called Manatee beaksedge, is a plant species endemic to a small region in central Florida. It has only been recorded across four Florida counties: Polk, Hillsboro, Manatee, and Sarasota. This species typically grows in sandy soil within pine woodlands. Rhynchospora megaplumosa is a perennial herb that grows up to 90 cm tall, and often forms clumps. Its culms are round in cross-section. The plant's spikelets are densely crowded, taper at both ends, and are light brown in color. Each spikelet measures about 9 mm long, and bears bristles that are nearly twice as long as the fruit. These bristles stick out from the spikelet, creating a feathery appearance.
