About Rhyacionia pinivorana (Lienig & Zeller, 1846)

Rhyacionia pinivorana, commonly known as the spotted shoot moth, is a species of moth belonging to the family Tortricidae. Its distribution ranges from northern and central Europe to eastern Russia, China, Korea, and Japan. Adult moths have a wingspan of 15–19 mm. Their forewings are brownish-ferruginous, and are sometimes sprinkled with dark fuscous; both the costa and dorsum are dark fuscous. The forewings are marked with numerous irregular, variable, anastomosing shining grey-whitish striae. The hindwings are grey. This species is similar to Rhyacionia buoliana, but is darker and less reddish in color. Adult Rhyacionia pinivorana are on wing in May and early June. The larvae of this moth feed on Pinus sylvestris, and specifically attack the tree's leading shoot.
