Rhododendron canescens (Michx.) G.Don has multiple common names: piedmont azalea, mountain azalea, wild azalea, native azalea, and dead man’s handkerchief. It is a pink-flowering azalea species native to the Eastern United States. Mature individuals of this species can grow up to 5 meters, which equals approximately 16.4 feet, in height. Its native range stretches from Pennsylvania to Texas, and it does not occur naturally in Virginia or West Virginia. It has been recorded growing in a variety of habitat types including swamps, savannas, flatwoods, and woodlands.
