Common and Scientific Name

The Mexican spotted wood turtle (Rhinoclemmys rubida), also called the Mexican spotted terrapin, is a species of turtle belonging to the family Geoemydidae.

Endemic Range

This species is endemic to Mexico. It lives on the Pacific slope of southern Mexico, at elevations ranging from sea level up to 1350 meters.

Subspecies Count

Two subspecies of the Mexican spotted wood turtle are currently recognized.

Subspecies Distribution

The subspecies R. rubida rubida inhabits Oaxaca and Chiapas, while the subspecies R. rubida perixantha inhabits Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, and Guerrero.
