Common and Scientific Names
The South American common toad, scientifically named Rhinella margaritifera, is also commonly called the mitred toad, and is known as sapo crestado in Spanish. This toad group is a species complex belonging to the toad family Bufonidae.
Distribution Range
Its distribution spans Amazonian South America, including Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela, as well as eastern Panama. Researchers originally thought this was a single species, but it is now confirmed to be a complex made up of multiple distinct species.
Natural Habitats
Its natural habitats include primary and secondary lowland, premontane, and montane tropical moist forests, which cover both terra firme and seasonally flooded forest types.
Habitat Adaptability
As a generalist species, it can also survive and be found in disturbed areas.
