About Rhene flavigera (C.L.Koch, 1846)
Rhene flavigera is a medium-sized jumping spider species. Females reach approximately 7 mm in body length, and the species shows the sexual dimorphism that is typical of jumping spiders. This species is characterized by having a broad, flat head and thick front legs. Its cephalothorax and legs are typically colored deep to light brown; its legs also display distinctive black and pale white banding patterns. Both the abdomen and cephalothorax are covered in fine hairs, and both are brown with added white and black markings. The abdomen itself has variable coloration patterns. R. flavigera has a broad distribution across Asia, with recorded occurrences in Pakistan, India, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia (including the island of Sumatra). It is particularly well-documented on the Indian subcontinent, where several of its former synonyms were originally described. The species can be found in a range of different habitats, including gardens, agricultural areas, and forests. It has specifically been observed in tea plantations in the Dooars region of West Bengal, India. R. flavigera constructs silk retreats by joining leaves together, and emerges from these retreats to forage for prey.
