This species was first described by Carl Linnaeus, published in his influential 10th edition of Systema Naturae in 1758. It has a wide distribution across the Holarctic realm. The larvae of Rhagium inquisitor burrow into the wood of larch, pine, spruce, birch, and oak trees.
