About Reseda luteola L.

Reseda luteola L. is a flowering plant species that belongs to the Resedaceae family. Its common names are dyer's rocket, dyer's weed, weld, woold, and yellow weed. It is native to Europe and Western Asia, and has been introduced to North America where it now occurs as a common weed. This species was the most widely used source of the natural dye also called weld, though other species in the Reseda genus were also used for dyeing. Reseda luteola is rich in luteolin, a flavonoid that creates a bright yellow dye. This yellow dye can be mixed with the blue dye obtained from woad (Isatis tinctoria) to make green shades such as Lincoln green.
