About Rauenia bonariensis (J.F.Gmelin, 1789)
The blue-and-yellow tanager (Rauenia bonariensis) is a bird species that belongs to the tanager family Thraupidae. Its range covers Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, the extreme northern border of Chile, and the Andean regions of Peru and Ecuador. Some populations from southern parts of the species' range migrate northeast during the austral winter to eastern Bolivia, northeastern Argentina, and Paraguay; in Paraguay, this species is only present as a non-breeding migratory visitor. Its natural habitats include subtropical or tropical dry forest, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical moist montane forest, subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland, and heavily degraded former forest. This species was previously classified in the genus Thraupis. A 2014 molecular phylogenetic study moved it to the genus Pipraeidea, and a 2020 study reclassified it into the genus Rauenia. It is the only species placed in the genus Rauenia.
