About Raphia frater Grote, 1864

Raphia frater, commonly called the brother moth or simply the brother, is a moth species belonging to the family Noctuidae. Its distribution ranges from Nova Scotia westward across the forested areas of Canada to British Columbia, and extends south to Mississippi in eastern North America. Its southern range limits in western North America remain unclear, because it is often confused with several closely related species or forms. The wingspan of Raphia frater adults measures 38 to 44 mm. Adults are in flight from April or May to August. This species produces one or two generations each year. Its larvae feed primarily on aspen, and have also been recorded feeding on alder, birch, cottonwood, and willow.
