It grows in a prostrate, sessile form that hugs the ground closely, with a growth habit similar to moss. This moss-like growth habit is one reason it is given the specific epithet bryoides. This species is endemic to New Zealand, where it is found only in montane areas of the South Island. It occurs in montane, subalpine, and alpine habitats. Ecologically, it frequently grows in plant communities alongside Raoulia grandiflora and Haastia pulvinaris.
