About Ranunculus pusillus Poir.
Ranunculus pusillus Poir., commonly known as low spearwort, is a species of flowering plant in the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. It is native to most of the eastern United States, ranging from New York south to Florida and west to Texas, and it is also found in California. This plant grows in wet habitats, where it is semi-aquatic: it can grow partially submerged, or grow terrestrially on muddy substrates. It is a hairless perennial herb that produces a slender stem that can be decumbent or erect, reaching up to half a meter in length. Its leaf blades are lance-shaped to oval, and grow on short petioles. Flowers are produced in spring, each bearing one to three tiny yellow petals no longer than 2 millimeters (0.079 inches) around a central receptacle that holds many stamens and pistils. The fruit is an achene, borne in a spherical cluster containing 18 or more achenes.
