About Raillardella scaposa (A.Gray) A.Gray
Raillardella scaposa is a species of flowering plant in the Asteraceae family, commonly known as stem raillardella. It is native to the Sierra Nevada of California and western Nevada, as well as parts of the southern Cascade Range in Oregon. It grows in a variety of habitat types that range from wet to dry, and from exposed to shaded locations. This is a rhizomatous perennial herb that grows in a clump made up of rosetted basal leaves. The leaves are linear to lance-shaped, can grow up to 16 centimeters long, and are glandular. The plant produces an inflorescence that ranges from just a few centimeters to half a meter tall, and this inflorescence is made up of flower heads that are cylindrical to hemispheric in shape. Each flower head contains many yellow to orange disc florets, and sometimes includes a small number of ray florets. The fruit is a long, narrow achene that measures 1 to 2 centimeters in length when its pappus of plumelike bristles is included.
