About Quercus margaretiae (Ashe) Small

Quercus margaretiae (Ashe) Small, also commonly spelled Quercus margarettae, Quercus margaretta, and Quercus margarettiae, is known by the common names sand post oak or dwarf post oak. This is a North American oak species belonging to the beech family. It is native to the southeastern and south-central United States, ranging from Virginia to Florida and extending west to Texas and Oklahoma. There are historical reports that this species once grew in New York State, but it has not been observed growing there for many years. Quercus margaretiae is a deciduous shrub or small tree that reaches a maximum height of 12 meters (40 feet). Its bark is gray and scaly. Its leaves can grow up to 135 millimetres (5+1⁄4 inches) long, and are bipinnately lobed with rounded lobes. This species grows in sandy or gravelly soil.
