About Pyrus pyrifolia (Burm.fil.) Nakai
Pyrus pyrifolia is a species of pear tree indigenous to southern China and northern Indochina, having been introduced in Korea, Japan, and other regions. Its edible fruit is called by various names, including Asian pear, Persian pear, Japanese pear, Chinese pear, Korean pear, Taiwanese pear, apple pear, zodiac pear, three-halves pear, papple, naspati, bata kisbis, Fefeta grained pear, and sand pear. In combination with cultivars of P. × bretschneideri and Pyrus ussuriensis, the fruit is referred to as the nashi pear. Cultivars of Pyrus pyrifolia are cultivated across East Asia and in countries such as Pakistan, Nepal, Australia, New Zealand, and America. In East Asia, the tree's flowers symbolize early spring and are commonly found in gardens and rural areas. The fruits, which are not typically used in pies or jams due to their high water content and crisp, grainy texture, are usually enjoyed raw and peeled. They are generally large and aromatic, and if carefully handled to prevent bruising, can be stored for several weeks (or longer) in a cool, dry environment.
