About Pyrrhula owstoni Rothschild, Hartert & Ejo, 1907

The Taiwan bullfinch, with the scientific name Pyrrhula owstoni, is a finch species that belongs to the family Fringillidae. This species is endemic to the mountain regions of Taiwan. It was formerly classified as a subspecies of the grey-headed bullfinch (P. erythaca), and this classification is still followed by most taxonomic authorities. However, a 2020 study determined that Pyrrhula owstoni is a distinct species that diverged from mainland Asian P. erythaca during the mid-Pleistocene. The International Ornithological Congress has accepted this reclassification as a separate full species.
