This species is classified scientifically as Pyrrhochalcia iphis (Drury, 1773).

Upper side description: Antennae are thickest at their midpoint. The head is scarlet, while the thorax and abdomen are black. All wings have a green brassy coloration, with black veins. The regions surrounding the body are raven black. The tips of the anterior (fore) wings are orange colored.

Under side description: The palpi are scarlet, hairy, and have small black extremities. The breast, legs, sides, and abdomen are black, while the anus is scarlet. The wings have a yellower brassy hue than they do on the upper side. The superior (fore) wings are tipped with orange, with greenish black coloration next to the body; this same greenish black color covers the external edges of the posterior (hind) wings.

The wingspan of this species measures 4 inches (100 mm).
