About Pyrrhia cilisca Guenée, 1852

Pyrrhia cilisca (Guenée, 1852) is a moth species that belongs to the family Noctuidae. It was first formally described by Achille Guenée in 1852. The taxon Pyrrhia adela is now treated as a synonym of Pyrrhia cilisca. Pyrrhia adela was originally introduced as a new scientific name for the North American moth population that had previously been classified as Pyrrhia umbra. Because of this taxonomic history, both this species and Pyrrhia umbra share the common name bordered sallow; the former Pyrrhia adela taxon was also known by the separate common name American bordered sallow. This moth is found in North America, ranging from Newfoundland west to Manitoba, and from South Carolina west to Texas. Its wingspan measures 32 to 40 mm. Adult moths are active in flight from May through October. The larvae of this species feed on alder, cabbage, rose, sumac, walnut, and a broad range of other plants.
