This species was described by Francis Walker, and was first published under its current scientific name in 1865. It is native to North America. Within the continent, it has been recorded across an area stretching from British Columbia to Ontario in the north, reaching as far south as North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Arizona. Its natural habitats are aspen parkland and grasslands.
