About Pyracantha coccinea M.Roem.
Pyracantha coccinea, commonly known as scarlet firethorn, is a European species of firethorn also called red firethorn. It has been cultivated in gardens since the late 16th century. This plant has small white flowers, slightly toothed leaves that grow opposite one another, and produces small, bright red berries. Raw fruit from this plant is bitter and astringent, making it inedible when raw. Cooked fruit can be used to make jellies, jams, sauces, and marmalade. Its native range extends from southern Europe to western Asia. It has been introduced to North America, where it has been grown as an ornamental plant since the 18th century. Since the late 18th century, it has been used in England to cover unsightly walls.
