About Ptyas carinata (Günther, 1858)

Ptyas carinata, commonly known as the keeled rat snake and also called the King koros, is a species of colubrid snake. This species is distributed across Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Singapore. This understudied species is likely the largest living species within the diverse colubrid family, a group that contains just over half of all extant snake species. For adult individuals of this species measured in Taiwan, recorded lengths range from 1.21 to 2.75 m (4 ft 0 in to 9 ft 0 in). The reported maximum size for the species is approximately 4 m (13 ft 1 in). On average, males are reported to be slightly larger than females. The species is thought to be an opportunistic predator that hunts a variety of prey, including rodents; in Indonesia, adult lizards are considered a significant part of its diet.
