About Ptocasius strupifer Simon, 1901
Ptocasius strupifer is a species of jumping spider belonging to the family Salticidae. It was first formally described by Eugène Simon in 1901, and it is the most frequently encountered species in the genus Ptocasius. The origin and meaning of the species name strupifer is unclear; Simon had previously used the same word when describing what is now classified as Araneus strupifer. This spider is distributed across the range from China to Thailand. It has also been recorded in Rajasthan, India, which marks the first time the species has been documented from the Indian subcontinent. Compared to larger jumping spider species like Plexippus paykulli and Hasarius adansoni, Ptocasius strupifer is relatively small. Because of this small size, it may act as prey for larger salticid species. Research has recorded predation pressure on P. strupifer from H. adansoni, as well as metabolic responses to predation risk in small jumping spiders that include P. strupifer.
