About Pterostylis hispidula Fitzg.
Pterostylis hispidula Fitzg. is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous herb that grows from an underground tuber. It produces a rosette of three to six egg-shaped to oblong leaves. Each leaf measures 10โ40 mm (0.4โ2 in) long and 5โ15 mm (0.2โ0.6 in) wide, is green to yellowish in color, has a wavy or crinkled edge, and grows on a distinct petiole. A single nodding, forward-leaning flower is borne on a flowering stem 150โ300 mm (6โ10 in) tall. The flower is translucent white with green stripes and a reddish tip, and measures 14โ18 mm (0.6โ0.7 in) long and 8โ10 mm (0.3โ0.4 in) wide. A wide gap sits on each side of the flower between the petals and the lateral sepals. The lateral sepals have tapering tips 5โ8 mm (0.2โ0.3 in) long, and a deeply notched sinus between them. The labellum protrudes from the flower; it is 9โ12 mm (0.4โ0.5 in) long, about 2 mm (0.08 in) wide, curved, dark-colored, and covered in short, bristly hairs. Flowering takes place from March to July. This species is found from Fraser Island, Queensland southward to Batemans Bay, New South Wales. It grows in a range of habitats, from coastal scrub to rainforest margins.
