About Pterostylis ampliata (D.L.Jones) D.L.Jones
Pterostylis ampliata is a herbaceous terrestrial orchid that grows a basal rosette of 3 to 4 ovate or oblong leaves. The basal rosette dies back when the plant produces a single large, forward-leaning flower. This flower grows on a stalk that reaches up to 25 cm (9.8 in) tall. The flower is mainly green with white stripes, and has some diffuse red-brown colouring. It has a sickle-shaped galea, and measures 4.5–7 cm (1.8–2.8 in) long. Flowering occurs between February and June, with timing differing based on location. This species is widespread in Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, and Victoria. It is most common in drier inland areas, and rarer in coastal regions. It grows primarily in sclerophyll forest and woodland with well-draining soil. It can grow on ridges, slopes, and flats, and often occurs on bare, skeletal soil.
