About Pterocaulon pycnostachyum (Michx.) Elliott
Pterocaulon pycnostachyum is a perennial herb that grows up to 80 cm (31 inches) tall. Its stems and the undersides of its leaves are covered by a thick, white layer of woolly hairs. Flower heads grow crowded into a densely packed spike at the tips of the branches. Each head can hold up to 50 small yellowish flowers. This species is monoecious: within a single flower head, some flowers have only male stamens, while other separate flowers in the same head hold only female pistils.
