About Psychotria marginata Sw.

Psychotria marginata Sw. is a tropical shrub in the gardenia family, Rubiaceae, that is native to Central America. The species occurs from southern Mexico into tropical South America, and it grows primarily in wet biomes. Its leaves have pits around 1 millimetre wide that provide a habitat for aggressive mites; these mites protect the plant's leaves from other herbivorous species. The leaves produced during the dry season and the leaves produced during the wet season look superficially similar, but they have large physiological differences: dry-season leaves only need half as much water to produce sugar as wet-season leaves.
