About Pseudosphinx tetrio Linnaeus, 1771
This species, Pseudosphinx tetrio Linnaeus, 1771, has distinct life stage characteristics. The adult moth is brown with gray and white markings, and its hindwing is a darker brown shade. Female adults are typically lighter in overall tone, and generally slightly larger than males, with a wingspan ranging from 12.7 to 14 centimeters. The adult body carries alternating gray, white, and black bands. The larval caterpillar stage can grow longer than 15 centimeters. It is black with aposematic yellow bands, and has a red-orange head. Near its posterior end there is an orange bump topped with a roughly 2-centimeter long black horn. Its legs are orange with black spots. The pupa stage measures around 7 centimeters long. When newly formed, it is yellow, and turns brown, darkening further to a reddish brown as it hardens.
