Psathyrella longipes (Peck) A.H.Sm. has a cap that ranges from 2.5 to 4.5 centimetres (1 to 1 3⁄4 inches) wide, and is conical in shape. A 'veil' of whitish fragments sits on the cap, contrasting against its base dull brown colour. As its common name suggests, it has a comparatively long stipe: the stipe measures 5–12 cm (2–4 3⁄4 in) long and 2–6 millimetres (1⁄16–1⁄4 in) thick. Microscopy may be required to reliably distinguish this species from closely related species. This fungus has an almost worldwide distribution. Based on iNaturalist reports, it is present in almost every country in Europe and North Africa, most states and provinces of North America, several South American countries, East Asia, and Australia. It produces fruiting bodies in autumn and early winter.
