About Protea rupicola Mund ex Meisn.

Protea rupicola Mund ex Meisn., commonly called the krantz sugarbush, is a flowering shrub in the genus Protea. Its Afrikaans common name is kranssuikerbos. This species has a heavily branched trunk and reaches a maximum height of 2 meters. It is endemic to South Africa, native to both the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces. It only grows in extremely localized populations near mountain summits. Its distribution spans the Groot Winterhoek and Klein Winterhoek mountain ranges, continues through the Hottentots Holland Mountains and Langeberg in the Western Cape, and reaches the portion of the Groot Swartberg mountains located in the Eastern Cape. It is classified as a rare plant. It grows on sandstone substrates, ridge crests, and rocky slopes, at elevations between 1,300 and 2,000 meters above sea level.
