About Protea nitida Mill.

Protea nitida Mill., commonly known by the common names wagon tree, waboom, or blousuikerbos, is a large, slow-growing Protea species that is endemic to South Africa. It is one of only a few Protea species that grows into a tree, and it is the only member of the genus that produces usable timber. Its natural native distribution extends from the Cape Peninsula, all the way to the Bokkeveld escarpment and further into the Eastern Cape. This species grows on mountain slopes across all elevation ranges, and can form large open woodlands when growing in suitable conditions. While Protea nitida is not considered a threatened species, populations in many areas have been cleared to harvest timber, and the cleared land is often replaced with commercial pine plantations.
