About Protea lacticolor Salisb.

Protea lacticolor, commonly called Hottentot sugarbush, Hottentot white sugarbush, Hottentot's Holland sugarbush, and Hottentotwitsukkerbos, is a flowering shrub in the Protea genus. This plant is endemic to South Africa, where its distribution ranges from the Slanghoek Mountains to the Hottentots Holland Mountains, and also includes Groenlandberg. It is a large, erect shrub that can grow up to 6 meters tall, and its main blooming period falls between March and April. After a fire, the adult plant dies, but its seeds survive. The seeds are held in a cap until they ripen, at which point they are released and dispersed by wind. P. lacticolor is unisexual, and pollination is carried out by birds. It grows along stream banks or on wet Sederberg shale, at altitudes between 600 and 1,500 meters. This species has been assigned national tree number 90.
