About Protea grandiceps Tratt.
Protea grandiceps Tratt. is a rounded shrub that grows to 2 metres (6 feet 7 inches) in height, and blooms between September and January. The entire plant is killed by fire, but its seeds survive. The seeds are held inside a cap and dispersed by wind. This species has unisexual flowers, and pollination is carried out by birds. This plant has been assigned the national tree number 89.2. It is endemic to South Africa, where it occurs across the Cape Peninsula, Hottentots Holland Mountains, Riviersonderend Mountains, Langeberg, Outeniqua Mountains, Tsitsikamma Mountains, Winterhoek Mountains, and Kammanassie Mountains. It most commonly grows in stony crevices on dry upper mountain slopes, at elevations between 1 200 and 1 700 metres (3 900 and 5 600 feet). The total area over which its fragmented populations are spread is approximately 652 square kilometres (252 square miles).
