About Primula veris L.

Primula veris L. is a variable evergreen or semi-evergreen perennial plant that grows up to 25 cm (10 in) tall and wide. It forms a rosette of leaves that measure 5–15 cm long and 2–6 cm broad. Its deep yellow flowers bloom in spring, growing in clusters of 10 to 30 blooms on a single stem. Each individual flower is 9–15 mm broad. Red- and orange-flowered individuals are rare, but can be locally common in areas where colored primula hybrids bloom at the same time as the native cowslip, allowing cross-pollination to occur. Cowslip (Primula veris) is most often found in more open areas than the primrose, including open fields, meadows, coastal dunes, and clifftops. When grown in cultivation, this plant has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
