Potentilla saxosa is a clump-forming perennial herb with drooping leaves and stems. Each leaf consists of a flat strip or a cluster of rounded, lobed leaflets. Its stem ranges in color from green to reddish, grows up to 30 centimeters long, and holds a clustered inflorescence of flowers. Each flower is nearly one centimeter wide, with hairy, pointed sepals and smaller yellow petals that vary from rounded to spoon-shaped. The center of the flower holds up to 40 stamens and many pistils. The fruit produced is a small, pale achene.
