About Potentilla biennis Greene

Potentilla biennis Greene is a species of cinquefoil, with two common names: biennial cinquefoil and Greene's cinquefoil. It is native to western North America, ranging from northwestern Canada down to the southwestern United States, where it grows in moist habitats. This plant is an annual or biennial herb that grows an erect stem up to 70 centimeters tall from a taproot. Its overall texture is hairy and glandular. Its hairy leaves are each divided into three toothed, oval leaflets, and each leaflet can reach up to 3 centimeters in length. The inflorescence forms a cyme that holds several flowers. Each individual flower has five oval yellow petals that measure 1 or 2 millimeters long, plus five triangular sepals that are slightly longer than the petals. The fruit produced by this species is a tiny whitish achene.
