About Porphyrospiza caerulescens (Wied-Neuwied, 1830)

The blue finch, also called the yellow-billed blue finch, has the current scientific name Porphyrospiza caerulescens (Wied-Neuwied, 1830), and is also referenced under the synonym Rhopospina caerulescens. This is a species of small bird. For a long time, it was classified either in the bunting family Emberizidae or the cardinal family Cardinalidae. However, more recent molecular studies have confirmed that it fits clearly within the Thraupini tribe of the family Thraupidae. This species occurs in Brazil and northeastern Bolivia. Its natural habitat is dry savanna. It is growing increasingly rare as a result of habitat loss.
