About Porphyrellus formosus (G.Stev.) J.A.Cooper

Porphyrellus formosus, commonly known as the dark velvet bolete, is a species of bolete fungus belonging to the family Boletaceae. It was first formally described as Tylopilus formosus by Greta Stevenson in 1962, and was reclassified into the genus Porphyrellus by J. A. Cooper in 2014. This fungus is endemic to New Zealand, where it forms mycorrhizal relationships with southern beeches and mānuka. Its key distinguishing characteristic is an all-black, velvety surface covering both its cap and stalk. It starts out with white pores that change to a golden color as it ages.
