About Polypodium hesperium Maxon

This species of polypody, Polypodium hesperium Maxon, anchors itself using a thin, scaly rhizome. It grows oblong leaves that reach a maximum length of 25 to 35 centimetres (9.8 to 13.8 inches) and a width of up to 7 centimetres (2.8 inches). Each leaf is composed of many segments with dull points; these segments are either linear or lance-shaped, and can have a thin, membranous texture or a firm, leathery texture. Their edges may be smooth or serrated. The underside of each leaf segment holds a small number of sori that are brownish, reddish, or nearly black, and these sori contain the fern's spores.
