Polylepis tarapacana Phil. is called queñoa de altura, which translates to 'high altitude polylepis or queñoa', in its native range by local Spanish speakers. It is a short tree or shrub that grows in small, scattered stands along the mountainous border region shared by Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru, within the Western Cordillera. This species grows in volcanic soils, at altitudes between 3,400 and 5,000 meters, or 11,200 and 16,400 feet.
