About Polygonia oreas (Edwards, 1870)

Polygonia oreas, commonly known as the oreas comma, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Nymphalidae. This butterfly is found in mountainous regions of North America, ranging from southern British Columbia and southwestern Alberta in the north down to northern California in the south. The wingspan of adult Polygonia oreas measures 42 to 52 mm. Depending on the local location, adults fly from June through October. The species inhabits two primary types of forest environments: coastal redwood forests and mountain conifer forests. The larvae of Polygonia oreas feed on plants from the Ribes genus. Adult butterflies feed on tree sap and rotting fruit, and only rarely feed on flower nectar.
