About Polygonella macrophylla Small
Polygonella macrophylla Small is a perennial herb or subshrub that grows from a woody base and a taproot, producing stiff, erect stems. Individuals of this species can grow to over one meter tall. Its leathery leaves are alternately arranged along the stems; the largest leaves, located near the stem bases, can reach up to 6.8 centimeters in length. Most leaves are oval in shape, with smooth edges and rounded tips. The plant’s inflorescence consists of multiple flower racemes, and two floral color forms exist: one with white or pinkish flowers, and one with red flowers. This species is distributed in Florida scrub of the Florida Panhandle and a section of southern Alabama. It grows in open scrub habitats and coastal dunes. While the species as a whole is generally rare, it can be common within its native range. The main threat to this species is loss of its scrub habitat, caused by development and silviculture.
