About Polygonatum multiflorum (L.) All.
Polygonatum multiflorum (L.) All. is a rhizomatous perennial that grows to 90 cm (35 in) tall and 25 cm (10 in) wide. It produces arching stems that bear alternate leaves. Slightly necked, pendent tubular white flowers with green tips hang from the undersides of its stems. This species is valued in cultivation for its ability to colonize shady areas, and it is well suited for woodland-style planting. Its fruit persists for an average of 17.5 days, and each fruit contains an average of 2.6 seeds. Fruits are on average 83.5% water by weight. The dry weight of fruit is made up of 43.6% carbohydrates and 1.2% lipids. The attractive shoots of Polygonatum multiflorum make this plant suitable for use in floral arrangements. For field-harvested cut shoots of the cultivar Polygonatum multiflorum ‘Variegatum’, postharvest longevity ranges from 15 to 22 days. Gibberellic acid, benzyladenine (BA), and hydroxyquinoline sulphate can be used to extend the lifespan of cut shoots, mainly by delaying leaf yellowing. The hybrid Polygonatum × hybridum, a cross between P. multiflorum and P. odoratum, has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
